Water 4 Kids International African villages gain access to clean water thanks to North Phoenix nonprofit

By Laura Latzko In the Phoenix area, water is such an important resource as temperatures climb in the summer. In many places throughout the world, especially in East Africa, people don’t have access to clean water and have to walk miles to collect it.

The North Phoenix faith-based nonprofit Water 4 Kids International helps villages in countries such as Uganda by building deep water wells or rain harvesting systems or providing water filtration devices.

Water 4 Kids is a division of Hope 4 Kids International, which serves people in impoverished communities through food, water, education and health care programs.

Hope 4 Kids was founded in 1973 by Tom Eggum, who has been involved in international relief efforts for more than 30 years.

The water wells built through Water 4 Kids make a difference in communities, bringing water to thousands or tens of thousands of people.

Most of the wells have been built in

Uganda.

Thus far, Water 4 Kids has built over 650 wells. Last year, the organization drilled 60 deep-water wells, with each well costing a little over $10,000.

The wells are strategically placed in central locations near schools, medical centers and trading areas and close to villages.

In many impoverished villages, women and children spend a quarter of their day collecting water. Often, the ponds, ditches, swamps or rivers they use have contaminated water, and their families run the risk of contracting waterborne illnesses.

On the way to get water, women may have to contend with animals such as snakes or face the danger of rape or abuse. Children could drown while trying to collect water.

Spending hours in pursuit of water can also negatively impact marital relationships and keep children away from school.

“The water is foundational to the community.

Without safe water, nothing is sustainable—relationships, health, the bonding of community,” Pacion says.

“So many things hinge on that ability to access clean, safe water. We are part of that

story of people going from barely surviving to thriving in these communities.”

Pacion says in communities where the wells have been built, children are able to get a better education and women can spend more time with their families and learn vocations.

Villages use the clean water for drinking, bathing, washing clothes and dishes, baptizing, watering crops and maintaining clean medical facilities.

“Clean water transforms the community from the ground up. It touches every aspect of their lives,” Pacion says.

As part of one project, Water 4 Kids helped to bring a water system to the Atutur General Hospital in Uganda. Before this, the hospital didn’t have access to water, and patients’ families and local villagers had to bring in water to the facility.

The wells built by Water 4 Kids function for 30 to 50 years with minimal maintenance.

Water 4 Kids works with a local drilling company in Uganda, which creates the deep-water wells.

Pacion says villagers are involved in the entire process and become part of the crews that help to maintain the wells.

“It gives them that sense of ownership. They want to do their best to make sure it’s going to stick around, and it’s going to be in good shape,” Pacion says.

The water well process involves identifying villages, getting donations, purchasing local land, doing geological surveys, drilling and dedicating the wells, teaching villagers how to maintain the well and monitoring the wells to make sure they

are functioning.

An on-the-ground team in Uganda assists with the well drilling process. A group of about 15 to 20 people work out of the United States, in Arizona and remotely from other states.

Churches, schools, businesses and individuals around the country help the organization to raise money through direct donations, fundraisers, charity walks and lemonade stands.

During the Water 4 Kids charity walks, participants walk or run a 3-to-4-mile course, which signifies the distance that many children and women have to go for water. The walks take place in cities in Arizona, California, Minnesota, Iowa, Utah and Michigan.

“It is a beautiful way to get communities involved, kids involved. We have churches that get involved in it. We have schools that get involved. It touches every level of society,” Pacion says.

Donors have a chance to see the impact of their monetary donations through mission trips to the villages receiving the water wells.

During these trips, they walk to the places where locals used to go to gather water and meet villagers who are using the wells.

By Emma Suttell Last May, I walked into State Farm Stadium to sing with my choir for the Class of 2019’s graduation ceremony.

I had done it before, as it is a tradition to sing the alma mater for graduation each year, however, this year felt different. Knowing that I would be walking across the stage wearing a cap and gown in less than 365 days was surreal.

Boulder Creek has become a second home for me for several reasons. Just like most other Anthem students, it is where I spend my time during the week balancing classes with clubs. More than just a school, Boulder Creek has given me the opportunity to embrace who I am, explore new opportunities for myself, engage with others and take risks in a place where mistakes are acceptable.

can stand out by participating in a variety of clubs and sports on campus. Some of last year’s clubs included Future Business Leaders of America, World Language Club and National Honor Society. Clubs are open to any and all students, and if you cannot find one you like, you can create your own with the help of a teacher adviser and a few friends at your side. Sports tryouts take place throughout the year and students can get involved by asking coaches or attending information sessions held throughout the year.

“High school is so short and it will go by so quickly,” says student Tag Herr.

“Get involved in as much as you can.

You will remember the assemblies, school dances and all the spirit weeks.”

Each year, BCHS celebrates several spirit weeks, mainly leading up to dances such as homecoming and prom.

Planned by Boulder Creek’s student government, spirit days are inspired by themes as simple as “class color day,” to something as exciting as “dress like a celebrity day” or “meme day.” Students choose to display their most eccentric outfits in an effort to show what they call “Jag Pride.” Although participation is optional, these weeks definitely prove that no student is “too cool for school,” as participation spans the entire campus.

The four years you spend at Boulder Creek will really be what you make of them. Now that you have heard it from other seniors as well as myself, remember: challenge yourself, ask questions, get involved, and embrace school spirit. With those guidelines, you are guaranteed to have an incredible freshman year. Class of 2023, welcome to “The Jungle.”

Youth for Troops Six teens are helping the military one care package at a time

By Ron Sanzone A group of teens is proving there isn’t an age restriction to show appreciation for those who are serving all of us.

Youth for Troops is an Anthem-based nonprofit that works to improve the lives of veterans and active-duty servicemen and women.

The organization was founded in 2017 by six local schoolchildren who comprise its current board of directors: Taylor Piatt, 19, Heather Piatt, 17, Hannah Piatt, 14, Sophie Hoffa, 17, Walter Hoffa, 16, and Leo Hoffa, 14. The three Piatts of Anthem are siblings, as are the three Hoffas of Tramonto.

The board members created the nonprofit after helping other organizations committed to helping the armed forces. Those groups encouraged them to branch out on their own so they could contribute in an even more meaningful capacity.

“We’ve been doing military events and volunteering for military personnel since we were really little,” Sophie says. “We started this organization because people under 13 sometimes aren’t allowed to volunteer at events. We wanted to get all ages together to serve, such as families, and young kids with older people.”

“We love to get youth involved, but all of our projects are intended to be for people of all ages,” Heather says. “Zero to 120 is what we like to say.”

Youth for Troops helps a multitude of ways.

Among them are packing and sending care packages with cards to troops deployed overseas, holding flag lines at military funerals and participating in medal ceremonies at VA hospitals.

Perhaps Youth for Troops’ most unique — as well as environmentally conscious — effort is providing plastic mats made entirely out of plastic bags to homeless veterans. The mats are 700 to 800 plastics bags crocheted. Youth for Troops partnered with Daisy Mountain Veterans to provide the mats after the departure of the latter’s head, Mary Ann Derryberry, who started the practice in 2016.

The six mostly homeschool students started Youth for Troops as an extracurricular activity with five adults. It has since blossomed into a charity that stages monthly events with up to 100 volunteers and an email list of 1,400

individuals of all ages. And it has done this without a marketing team or budget.

“We really only grow by word of mouth, so we try to get our volunteers to tell others,” Hannah says. In addition, “we do a lot of networking events.”

To bring awareness of the group, the board members conduct interviews, man volunteer booths at various events and visit schools and businesses. The school presentations are particularly effective in creating a pipeline of volunteers because once students become

Everything’s Coming Up Roses Artist creates thousands of mixed-media roses before big studio tour

By Sue Kern Fleischer It may be too hot outside for roses to bloom, but in Andrea Cook’s studio, dozens of roses are coming to life every day as the talented mixed media artist prepares for Arizona’s longest-running artist studio tour, Hidden in the Hills.

A signature event of the nonprofit Sonoran Arts League, Hidden in the Hills features 198 artists in 47 studio locations throughout the scenic Desert Foothills communities of Cave Creek, Carefree and North Scottsdale. Now in its 23rd year, the free, self-guided tour takes place during the last two weekends of November (Friday, November 22 to Sunday,

November 24, and Friday, November 29 to Sunday, December 1.)

Sculptural garden of roses Cook tends to her “Garden of Roses” with the same passion as a master gardener. But rather than tilling soil and planting seeds, Cook creates each individual sculptural rose using hand dyed, painted, or pure fabrics made from canvas, burlap, cotton and muslin.

The result is an explosion of color, texture and beauty that takes the form of one-of-akind wall hangings, large sculptural installations, wedding keepsake boxes, wedding

albums and frames and place settings.

Born and raised in Dallas, Cook was drawn to art at an early age. By the time she was in high school, she had experimented with different media, including watercolor, ceramics and printmaking. She fell in love with sculpture while attending the University of Texas at El Paso, where she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in sculpture and painting.

After college, she experimented with different artistic endeavors, trying to discover a way to bring out her own imagination and inner light. She also explored different environments, living in New Mexico, North Carolina and Oregon. At the end of 2015, she moved to Anthem.

Though she has a strong work ethic, she was never one to hold a desk job. She worked at various artistic jobs, such as picture framing, firing kilns, mixing paint at a hardware store until she found her true calling with her sculptural roses. Her “Garden of Roses” project started off as a large, soft sculpture, temporary installation and has since flourished into a full-time career.

Like gardening, Cook’s work requires stamina and patience. She begins with an idea in her mind, but then lets her creativity guide her.

“I love for my art to be beautiful, colorful and textural working with pattern and repetition to create unity,” she says.

“I always have an idea of how I want an art piece to go, but I try to let the work happen naturally.”

While labor-intensive, the process fuels her energy and passion. She starts by ripping large yards of canvas or cotton-based fabric into strips and peeling the strings off the edges. Next, she uses pure fabric, or dyes

the fabric to produce rich and vibrant colored strips.

She then takes a strip of fabric and immerses it in a light-fast, archival quality adhesive to form the fabric into the shape of a rose. Once shaped, she glues the rose in place on a canvas, sometimes using a toothpick to nest it tightly in a row or circle of roses.

“I never sit down…I’m always standing,” she says, adding that her ergonomic desk moves up and down. “I have to work quickly because once the glue begins to dry, there’s no going back – you can’t undo a mistake.”

When she is satisfied with composition, she lets the piece dry for at least three days. She completes each of her sculptural wall pieces by painting the sides of the canvas or wood panel and wiring the back so that it can be hung vertically or horizontally. Some of her pieces are also round.

“I find the process to be meditative and therapeutic,” she says, adding her two cats, Indy and Karma, often help her when it comes to cleaning up the loose strings from the shredded fabric. “I love the challenge of achieving a painterly flow within different shapes. I’m also very conscious of what each colored rose symbolizes, though that doesn’t dictate my creativity.”

‘Wild Desert Roses’ on exhibit now Andrea’s largest sculptural work, and perhaps the piece she is most proud of, is her “Wild Desert Roses” installation on exhibit through August 25 at the Vision Gallery in Chandler. The 26-piece installation features 3,509 roses and took more than a year to create.

“The ‘Wild Desert Roses’ are dedicated to all of the people whose lives have been affected by cancer,” she says. “I created it in loving memory of my mom, Billye Cook, who lost her battle with cancer in 2015. I know she would have loved it.”

She found inspiration for the large piece in the natural blooms of the Sonoran Desert.

“Many people mistakenly think of the desert as dry, brown and dull. These beautiful colors breathe vibrancy and life into the desert. The bold pinks, corals, oranges, and yellows represent love, courage, grace, health and happiness,” she says.

Creating special memories This will be Cook’s second year exhibiting at Marty Roop’s Studio No. 25 in Cave Creek. A Sonoran Arts League board member, Roop is well-known for his impressionistic oil paintings. Other guest artists at Roop’s studio include realist acrylic painter Ashwini Bharathula, mixed media/collage painter Nancy Christy-Moore, glass artist Jacki Co-

hen, and metal artist Bill Birke.

Last year, while exhibiting during Hidden in the Hills, Cook created a new line of work for the wedding industry.

“Marty’s daughter had just gotten married and we collaborated on a large, black picture frame with red roses for a beautiful black and white wedding photo,” she says. “Marty custom built the frame and I sculpted the roses to complete the exquisite piece. That experience prompted me to start my second business, Rose Memories Designs. During Hidden in the Hills, I will exhibit some of my wedding keepsakes as well as my fine art.”

Teenagers need to slow down or face the consequences

By Judge Gerald Williams Every week, law enforcement agents issue at least four, but usually around six, tickets to high school students in Anthem for speeding.

Almost none of the allegations claim the juvenile was going only a few miles per hour over the speed limit. Nearly all claim that the high school student was traveling at a rate of approximately 20 or more miles per hour over the posted speed limit.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an average of 16,375 teenagers died each year from 1999 to 2006.

Approximately half of those deaths were due to accidents. Within the category of accidents, teens were most likely to die in a motor vehicle accident. In fact, that subgroup represented 73% of all accidental deaths. Of course, one way to get in such an accident is to drive 20 mph over the speed limit.

Nobody expects high school students to be

Juveniles in Justice Court When juveniles violate the law, their case is usually heard in a Juvenile Court. However, with permission from the Juvenile Court, youth can also be cited into a Justice Court.

Essentially the same thing will happen in each situation.

Juvenile Court uses a vocabulary that sounds as if it came from a Charles Dickens novel. It uses terms like “delinquent” and “incorrigible.” It is perhaps safe to assume that modern high school students, even if they have never read anything by Dickens, do not want to be labeled as a “juvenile delinquent.”

Juveniles cited into a Justice Court for a civil traffic violation will always have the option of either entering a plea of responsible and paying a fine or requesting a hearing to challenge the ticket. In most cases, they will also have the option, with the judge’s permission, to attend a class in return for the charge being dismissed.

With such a license, there are restrictions on driving after midnight and on the number of other teenagers the child driver can have with them in the car. Some restrictions apply to everyone.

Speed limits are in place for a variety of reasons. Even arterial roads (e.g., Anthem Way, Gavilan Peak, Daisy Mountain, etc.) in residential areas have the potential for the sudden appearance of a child on a scooter. If you are going 50 mph, and if you react to the need to stop in 2 seconds, you will travel over 40 feet before you do so.

low speed limits. Juveniles cannot appear in court without a parent, so if you are in high school, feel free to ask your parents if they would not mind using some of their vacation time at work to accompany you to court.

Anthem Prep is looking forward to the next 10 years

By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski Anthem Preparatory Academy headmaster Grant Goodrich has watched his school grow since he was hired as founding faculty in 2010 to teach Latin, Greek and chess.

The two are celebrating their 10-year anniversaries this school year and using the opportunity to reflect on that decade. Students will boast a new crest on their uniforms when they start school on August 7.

“I’ve been looking at the students and the faculty and trying to focus on who we are, how we’ve changed as a school, the essence of our school and looking forward to the next 10 years,” says Goodrich, who was named headmaster in January 2018.

Anthem Prep, which is part of the Great Hearts network of public charter schools, is a “classical preparatory academy” that offers a “transformative educational experience.” As Goodrich’s resume shows, Anthem Prep offers a well-rounded education. The longtime Great Hearts employee graduated from ASU with a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy and religious studies in 2010. He is studying British and American literature through Southern New Hampshire University.

Meager beginnings Anthem Prep’s first location was a shopping mall on the west side of Interstate 17. The school had a small faculty and only went to ninth grade. It quickly grew, moving to the new campus on the east side of Interstate 17.

“One reason we’re celebrating the 10th year is because we’re coming into our own,” Goodrich says. “Great Hearts has matured and we’ve begun to carve out a space in the charter realm to see how we fit into this.

“It’s Great Hearts’ 15th year as a charter organization. Our growth has paralleled that in many ways.”

Great Hearts, he says, helped get resultsbased funding passed so it has more freedom to teach what it wants to teach and has more funding to do that. It works, according to Goodrich. Students have high test results on standardized tests.

The mix of faculty helps with that.

“Great Hearts hires a lot of new faculty,” Goodrich says. “They hire right out of liberal arts college. We have a nice blend of veteran faculty for 10 years, though. There are so many founding faculty who are the unity of the school, the unity of the curriculum.”

Testimonials Senior Kayla Wang of Anthem feels that unity. She views her career at Anthem Prep as “rewarding.”

“It taught me to have a good work ethic,” says Wang, who has been at Anthem Prep since she was in the third grade. “The teachers are caring. I like the small school community as well.”

While at Anthem Prep — the same school from which her brother graduated — Wang participated in cross country and concert choir. The 17-year-old student’s favorite class was humane letters.

“Instead of a lecture-type class, it’s more of a seminar,” she says. “You’re having a conversation with your peers. We discuss different texts and we use classical books. We’ll read them and discuss different topics about them in class.

“It’s an active class setting. Everyone gets the chance to participate, instead of being told what to think.”

Fellow senior Joel Palazzo plans to major in mechanical engineering with an emphasis in aerospace when he graduates. He feels he was aptly prepared at Anthem Prep.

“With the physics and math I’ve been doing, I really fostered a love for it,” he says about engineering. “I love to build things.

“The school has a lot of opportunities for student growth. The school is focused on the student and academic growth, rather than other aspects. There’s a lot of one-on-one tutoring. It helps me stay prepared and on top of all of my classes.”

Unlike other, bigger schools, there isn’t a stigma on tutoring at Anthem Prep. Palazzo sees it as a “big study group.”

He’s active at Anthem Prep, as a member of the student government, and the football, basketball and baseball teams. Palazzo says

he enjoyed his time playing sports at Anthem Prep.

“There was a lot of one-on-one time with the coach, but not as much athleticism and competition,” he says. “You still have to work for it. It’s not handed to you.”

His mother, Kimberly, also enrolled Joel’s brother in Anthem Prep.

“I was looking at alternative schools that were similar to the private schools kids went to on the East Coast,” says Kimberly, who grew up in Upstate New York.

“We felt strongly about a college prep education for both of the boys. What attracted us was the lack of choice. I explain it like this: Great Hearts is like In-N-Out Burger. If you want a lot of choices, don’t go there. If you want chicken, don’t go there. It’s a classical liberal arts school.”

Kimberly was also sold on the discipline within the school and the curriculum. Students can learn Greek and Latin, and Anthem Prep’s math and science courses are rigorous. The availability of sports makes it a well-rounded school.

“It’s not for everybody,” she says. “Some excel there and some don’t.

The kids want to learn. I love the uniform. They’ve always worn a uniform. It makes getting ready in the morning easier. That was just another factor.”

Looking back For Goodrich, the 10th anniversary causes him to look back at his career. After all, this year’s 12th graders were part of his first year third-grade class.

“It’s quite special to think back,” he says. “It doesn’t seem that long. I see these kids now wearing the blazers around campus and being role models. It definitely makes me feel old.

“But there’s something quite special about seeing that transition and growing year after year for the last decade.”

And Goodrich is passionate about Anthem Prep and Great Hearts.

“The actual education of Anthem Prep sounds quite stuffy,” he says.

“We read great, great books and have seminars. It’s really relationship focused. We firmly believe education cannot happen unless the gap between the teachers and students is eliminated.

Promising a Season Boulder Creek football looks forward to the fall season with renewed hope

Coach Anthony Casarella stood in front of the Boulder Creek football team in school auditorium early on a hot July 24 morning, as part of the group’s first day of preseason training camp.

They discussed creating a positive change at the school; thanking parents and supporters for their help on and off the field; and everything other than actual football strategy.

With the clock ticking and an August 30 season opener at Skyline High School in the back of their minds, Casarella asked each of his seniors the ways they could individually be better teammates and help improve the program. With words like “leadership” and “effort” bouncing around the room, the coach offered constructive criticism or personal advice to each of the players based on his answers.

If the players embrace the changes to themselves and the team they said aloud, the 2019 version of Jaguar football could be something special.

“We’ve got about three months,” Casarella says. “After that, no more of these meetings, no more sitting listening to me talk, no more Boulder Creek football for you seniors, and I know a lot of you are going to miss it.

“So, let’s try to make the most of every single experience we have in those three months.”

Since taking over as head coach for the 2016 season, Casarella has said the Jaguars are in the midst of a “culture change.” The 2019 Boulder Creek team is just the latest chapter.

ing rolling on the ground and pushing dummies down the practice field, and offensive skill players and defenders issued friendly challenges to each other in seven-onseven passing practice, it was clear the players each cared about improving. Several players feel the current roster is the more dedicated to the game than past groups.

“Last year, people were goofing around in the weight room.

Now we’re more serious, in the gym and in the film room,” says junior quarterback Bear Milacek. “These guys really want it.”

The team has seemingly bought into Casarella’s system, in spirit and on the field. The players are hoping wins come as a byproduct.

Boulder Creek finished the last two seasons with identical 4-7 records and blowout losses in the first round of the 6A playoffs.

The returning varsity players understand the team’s reputation — senior Ethan Burts says opponents perceive them as a team that usually scrapes into the playoffs and is an easy elimination — and are determined to rack up more wins. In their minds, success would be

a reward to loyal fans and boosters as well as the team.

“It’s really motivating, because that’s two years in a row that that’s (4-7 record) happened, and we’re just trying to do something for this community,” Burts says.

“Our community shows up and supports us all the time, and we haven’t really showed out for them, so we want to chance that now,” adds senior Conner Lewis.

With typical spring practices and a summer of preparation, the 2019 offseason appeared just like any other, until a June passing tournament.

Because of key returning players and a renewed hope for success, the Jaguars boasted the No. 1 seed and reached the semifinals, giv-

ing the group a much-needed confidence boost.

“We took out top teams that Boulder Creek in the past shouldn’t be beating. That was a big deal for us,” Burts says.

Unlike the short, 20-minute passing-league games — without linemen and tackling — the regular season and ensuing playoffs will be more physically draining. Boulder Creek will have to prepare even more for tired legs and minds at the end of games.

Many 6A teams like Chandler High, who defeated the Jaguars in the first round of the 2018 postseason, sport 100 or more kids on their rosters. Boulder Creek is one of the few at the highest level of competition who have several two-way starters, or players regularly contributing on offense and defense, because Casarella says there are just around 40 kids on the varsity.

Thus, each of the 40 has a specific role, and contributes in a unique way on the field. Rather than feeling overwhelmed due to numbers, the players make sure they’re in great physical condition so they can battle in fourth quarters of close contests.

“I would say it’s more of a reason to work hard, we kind of put that on our shoulders,” says junior running back Jacob Cisneros.

Before Casarella dismissed the energetic team to run to the field in their football cleats, he challenged each of the players to hold himself and each other accountable as the first step toward what he hopes will be a fun and memory-filled season.

“We’re building championship program here,” Casarella tells the seated players. “That’s where everything has to start. If we do that, the wins and glory of that come as a result.”

ProMusica takes Americana to the people of Ireland

By Bridgette Redman Sometimes the most memorable musical moments are the unexpected ones.

ProMusica Arizona recently traveled as musical ambassadors to Ireland, performing three formal one-hour concerts in cathedrals across the Emerald Isle.

While the 22 singers of the North Phoenix community chorale planned ahead to sing their repertoire of Americana music ranging from country-western to American pop, they also made two unexpected, impromptu performances.

The first was at Jerpoint amid the ruins of Newtown. They arrived as tourists and were taken about by the man who had discovered the 12th century town after buying the land to raise sheep and sheepdogs. They visited the supposed grave of St. Nicholas, where his earthly remains were said to have been brought back by Norman knights from the Middle East, and stood between three walls of a ruined church.

They were asked to sing.

song everyone could sing off the top of their head without music,” says Connie Henry, a founding member of the chorale who went on the trip. “It was beautiful and very moving to revisit history and to wonder what it would be like to perform music in those churches.”

Later they sang in a second ruin under similar conditions, but the group’s main concerts were held every other day on the trip in Limerick, Killarney and Kilkenny. They were spots chosen jointly by the organization’s artistic director, Patti Graetz, and Tempe-based Music Celebration International.

“It was such a great experience being able to go and preview the towns and churches and performance venues and come home and design an itinerary that was a little different than what had been proposed,” Graetz says.

“The director’s tour gave me some knowledge I wouldn’t have had otherwise.”

That included the trip to Jerpoint.

As for the planned concerts, Graetz says the director trip also gave her insight into

how to plan the repertoire, which was very different from what they typically perform in their local concerts.

“Our tour guide (for the director’s preview tour) was a choir director,” Graetz says. “He said please don’t sing Irish music when we come to Ireland. Leave that to us. We love American music. So the program I chose was all Americana, folk songs through jazz and popular songs from the ’30s and ’40s to Broadway to modern day. The audiences really loved the variety. We kind of took them on a musical history journey of American music.”

Graetz says she purposely designed the concert to be an eclectic mix that didn’t require a high-brow listener. The result was something the audience was surprised by.

“It really was a concert for the people,” Graetz says. “A lot of the touring groups are geared toward singing sacred music in these big massive churches. In the minds of the directors, they’re going to be singing great sacred literature from the past. So, for us to come in and do a program that was completely different from that genre, they were pleasantly surprised. We got standing ovations at all of our concerts.”

Henry points out that much of America’s country-western music and folk music has Celtic origins and was inspired by Irish immigrants, which might be why so many of the Irish love America’s country western songs.

She says such songs as “Ghost Riders in the Sky” and other old favorites from the western songbook were enthusiastically received and afterward the audience would stay and talk to them about America, their music and the towns they came from.

They even met people who winter in Arizona and now plan to attend their concerts.

“We’re actually drumming up patrons for our next year—who knew we would import them from Ireland,” Henry says. “They were five ladies who just loved country music and they wanted to talk about country music. That’s not something we ordinarily sing all the time, so it was fun to do.”

are sometimes an hour, they share time with the ProMusica Orchestra and don’t typically have to prepare an entire hour of music. The group who went did so in eight weeks’ time, getting together to rehearse once a week.

Music Celebrations took care of all the arrangements and promotions, so ProMusica had no idea what the audiences were going to be like, but they were pleased with the warm reception they received everywhere and their first concert even include da reunion.

One choir member, Jane Turner, missed the first day of touring because the airlines had screwed up her connecting flights. She was frustrated and sad about it because she planned to meet her Irish cousins for the first time.

While dressing for their first concert at St. Mary’s Cathedral Church of Ireland in Limerick, she was told that her cousins were in the audience.

“What a surprise!” Turner says. “I had communicated my ill-fated arrival to them. Some cousins had responded by attending this first concert. There was a lot of excitement in my singing voice that night.”

After the concert ended, the cathedral host and emcee announced her cousins were there to meet her.

“The whole audience clapped and some had tears in their eyes,” Turner says. “I was so surprised and elated as we hugged and introduced ourselves.”

Graetz says performing in these buildings that dated back to the 12th century was breathtaking. Henry says they had to slow down some of their songs because of the reverberation and incredible acoustics of the building.

“Musically being able to perform in these cathedrals—we sounded fabulous,” Graetz says. “We couldn’t sound bad if we tried. The acoustics were amazing.”

It gave all of the choir members the opportunity to accomplish their goal—to be musical ambassadors from Phoenix to Ireland and to make real and authentic connections.

“Music knows no boundaries as far as language is concerned,” Henry says. “You can appreciate music even if it is not in your own language and of course they speak English.

Music is a transformational power that connects people and finding that connection with people is really special. It was amplified by singing in the most gorgeous venues around that date back to the 600s.”

Henry, who was one of the first 100 people to move to Anthem, credits music as helping her form friendships and bond with people from around the country and now Ireland.

It is also something she says transcends cultures and people, especially at a time when she thinks our daily life is getting bogged down in the divisiveness of government and politics. They could leave that behind and just be “people to people” with the music to connect them.

“Wherever I go, music is a connector of people,” Henry says. “It’s so important whether you are going country to country or location to location in your own state. It’s just a way to connect with people that transcends anything else.”

Anthem flag football team advances to national tournament

By Griffin Fabits Pinpointing any sort of expectations for a team full of 10-year-olds in the biggest tournament of their young athletic careers is illadvised. Justin Simons knew this.

So, Simons, the head coach of the 10u Team Impact Flag Football team in Anthem, figured he’d let his kids loose. There were no expectations to be had for the impending weekend.

No projections, no pressure.

And here they were: Touching down at Denver International Airport with a full slate of games scheduled for late June, readying for a Southwest Regionals flag football tournament in Denver.

Team Impact was one of 81 teams competing at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park — home of Major League Soccer’s Colorado Rapids team — in the tournament sponsored by the NFL’s Play 60 organization.

Simons’ laid-back, low-key expectations

were soon rewarded when Team Impact steamrolled its way to a first-place finish. It scored 146 points in six games and gave up just 19. In a pool of teams from Colorado, New Mexico, Hawaii and Utah, Team Impact, Arizona’s lone representative, was crowned champions.

Next up: the national tournament in Tampa, set for December 2020.

“Everybody (in Denver) knew about the team from Arizona,” Simons says.

As if opposing teams in Arizona weren’t already aware of Simons’ 10u Team Impact, now the entire country is on watch. The 2 1/2-yearold team’s record is 88-4.

“We’ve traveled to California, Las Vegas, Denver, now we’re going to Florida.”

To compete in tournaments, teams must be affiliated with an organization with NFL Play 60, Simons says. Team Impact 10u is an affiliation of its Scottsdale-based parent group,

Team Impact.

The Team Impact brand also fields an 8-year-old, 12-year-old and 14-year-old team.

In Denver, Simons and Team Impact traveled with just six kids; two other children were unable to travel to Colorado. So, they rolled with a one-man bench — given the five-on-five competition — and waltzed to six consecutive wins.

Simons has always known he possesses an incredibly talented roster. He also knew Team Impact’s play calling and execution was so advanced that rarely does it mirror what opposing 10-year-old teams run. But on a grander stage, competing against some of the Southwest’s top teams, he wondered how their success would translate.

And to great delight, nothing wavered. The offense was as fluid and dominant in Denver as it ever had been.

“Everything has been practiced and there’s timing down that we’ve had a ton a practice on. We can run a hurry-up offense and there will be no mistakes. We’re pretty mistake-free.”

Their next big challenge awaits them next winter in Tampa. To keep the momentum rolling, ensuring his team continues playing at this level, Simons has mapped out a minimum of four tournaments over the next 18 months.

Despite a relatively restrained approach to that regionals weekend, Simons is already going into nationals with a revamped mindset: He’s eyeing another first-place finish, this time on the sport’s biggest stage.

“I want to win it all,” he says. “I think our talent is very, very good. And, why not us? I know we’re going to see some challenges, but I think we have the talent and the ability to do it.”

Krav Maga Success Story Anthem retiree uses free time to study Israeli martial art

Bob Tallman is a retired school teacher and judo instructor, but he isn’t taking his time off lightly.

The 80-year-old spends his weeks training in the Israeli martial art of Krav Maga, a military self-defense and fighting system developed in Israel and sourced from boxing, wrestling, aikido, judo and karate.

He began studying a year ago at Phoenix Krav Maga and Fitness in Anthem with owner Matt Numrich. Tallman attends Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

“Wrestling and judo really are sports,” Tallman says. “Krav Maga is totally self-defense.

It’s more real life. We throw people around, but there are rules. With Krav Maga, there are no rules. These are real-life situations.”

Numrich is impressed with Tallman’s work ethic.

“Right now, Bob is our oldest student,” Numrich says. “Bob never complains about aches and pains and never says he ‘can’t’ do something because of his age. Just like other students who have old injuries, we might have

to adjust a drill or two, but that is rare.”

Tallman says he loves taking Krav Maga because it keeps him young and in shape. Plus, it keeps him safe.

“I’m from a small town in Iowa and moved here five years ago,” Tallman says. “I had a little martial arts program that I presented to nurses at the VA. Basically, I was saying women are more likely to be attacked than men. Also, I’m in an age group now that is likely to be attacked.

“I’m 80 years old. They only attack because

they think they’re stronger. When you see an 80-year-old man in the parking lot at Walmart, you think he might be susceptible. So, I had to take more of a self-defense class.”

The staff and students at Krav Maga have embraced Tallman, he adds. He’s just as smitten with them.

“The men and women I have encountered at the Anthem Krav Maga are outstanding,” Tallman says. “They attend classes to learn how to do bad things to bad people. But I have had the pleasure to be on the receiving end of their caring, generous friendship. I believe, because of my age, they all look out for me. Like, when I lean against the way to catch my breath, several are always ‘keeping an eye’ on me.”

Tallman was a school teacher for 35 years in Iowa. While living in Knoxville, Iowa, he taught physical education and health, and coached wrestling and tennis. After he was promoted to black belt, he opened a judo dojo, where he taught for 15 years.

He’s so attached to martial arts that he’s writing children’s books about it: “Samurai’s Destiny” is about a little boy who’s a trained Samurai in 12th-century Japan.

Tallman was forced to use his judo skills when he subdued a man who shot his way into neighbor’s house.

“I am indebted to Krav Maga and to those who practice with me to allow me to hone my skills,” Tallman says. “I have more peace of mind and self-confidence in unfamiliar situations because of it. I think Krav is like car insurance: I buy it hoping I’ll never need it.

Charging stations have been added to select Walmart Supercenters, including the newest one in Anthem at 4435 W. Anthem Way. This allows busy families to charge their electric vehicles while they shop. Here are crafts and hacks to start the year off right

Back to school is around the corner for most Arizona schools. Here are some quick and easy ways to get ready for school!

Bobby pins are a cute way to dress up your hair. We used nail polish to paint designs on the pins. Allow to dry and you have quick and easy hair art. You can also use E-6000 glue to adhere jewels or beads for extra flair. A good travel or backpack tip is to pack them in a clean, empty Tic-Tac container. It seems our pins are always getting lost so this helps to keep them where we can find them. Now you have cute hair pins for back to school.

Stickers are great way to customize water bottles, folders, pencil boxes and other items taken to school. You can make them with parchment or wax paper, clear packing tape and images for the stickers. You can draw the designs, print them or use photos that you have printed.

Start with a piece of wax paper. Cover

with the clear packing tape. Next, place the sticker image that has been trimmed on top of the tape. Make sure there is space in between the stickers.

Now cover the stickers with more clear packing tape. Use your hands or a coin to rub all the air bubbles out. Cut around the images leaving at least a quarter inch away from the design. Carefully peel the sticker from the wax paper when ready to use. Get creative making your own personal stickers.

Personalized pencils are another backto-school item that is a must have. Pencils are easy to lose, so decorating them can help make sure they are not mistaken for someone else’s. You can paint the whole pencil to start. After it is dry, you can add designs of your choice.

A fast way to create dots is using a pencil eraser dipped in paint or use circle stickers and paint over them for a perfect dot. You

can use painter’s tape to make clean lines as well. Once dry peel the tape or stickers to see the design. You can also use permanent markers to write favorite quotes or words of encouragement to make someone’s day.

August is a time for possible change

By Pastor David Bowen, Standing Stones Community Church Standing Stones Christian Academy OK, I admit it. I enjoy history. My kids, however, not so much. But that does not dissuade me from using history as a tool for teaching them traits I hope will last long into their adult years. The month of August is named after the Roman Emperor Augustus. Augustus had many faults, but he also changed Rome, and in doing so, changed the world. Not all of these changes were good. In fact, many were harsh and are still affecting lives today. However, this young emperor did accomplish some good.

If we focus on the good this world leader accomplished and model some of the principles he incorporated into his leadership, we can make a positive impact for our families.

In the 41 years he ruled, he imposed order. He ended a long period of civil wars and started a period known as Pax Romana or Roman Peace, which would last for over two centuries. His reforms led to prosperity for the Roman Empire.

Cities prospered as he commissioned roads to be built, as well as physical structures such as aqueducts, baths and amphitheaters, all staples in a Roman lifestyle.

Of all the Caesars, his reign was the longest and it brought peace and stability.

He secured peace for his people by creating a standing army designed to make Rome safe from the “barbarians” of foreign countries.

What if? What if we applied some of those principles to our family structure? What if we focused on creating and maintaining peace and stability?

What if we focused on taking actions that would allow our families to prosper? When I say prosper, I am not advocating financial prosperity, but social,

physical and spiritual well-being.

All family members, but especially our kids, need to feel secure. What can we incorporate into our family structure to keep the “barbarian” influence of the worldly culture out of our homes? I am willing to create an army to protect my family from the darkness, deception and manipulation that seems to be rampant in our culture. Morals and values have slowly dissolved into incongruous, inappropriate acceptance of behavior and attitudes that have slowly robbed us of ambition and purpose. It saddens me when I see the complete lack of joy and self-esteem be so common place and socially acceptable.

This is the civil war we are fighting now. It’s the values of the culture trying to get our kids to imitate and absorb into their future, habits and beliefs that will be transferred into the next generation. As the Emperor Augustus did, it’s time to fight back, for the sake of our families and generations that follow.

To advance the Roman empire, Augustus built new pathways. He incorporated new structures. Obviously, this will be personal and individual for every household, but is it time to look back at history to see what the future can be? Because of the heat in Arizona, August is usually a tough month, however, it is also a month that we begin to get back into a routine. The summertime schedule transitions into another school year. This could be an ideal time to transition some change into the family structure. What if we focused our families on prospering this coming school year? What if?

Mercedes Benz GLE450 This 2020 car is never boring

By C.A. Haire The new 2020 GLE450 is being shipped to Mercedes dealers, so we grabbed one for a oneweek test drive. This is an impressive SUV, but a pricey one when it’s loaded with options.

The base cost starts at $61,000. But how about an air suspension package for $8,000 more, or leather trim at $3,000? In fact, we have a list of 29 options, totaling $35,000!

When all is done, the sticker reads a tidy $96,320.

At this price, there are a lot of toys to play with. The multicontour front seats with massage features make long highway trips comfortable, as does the air suspension. Press the Dynamic button, and you can find off-road, eco, comfort, sport, sport+ and custom settings.

There is a switch to bring five different gauge cluster designs, so something for everyone. A very bright heads-up display projects useful information on to the windshield, so drivers don’t need to take their eyes off the road. There are two navigation screens: a large one on the dash and a smaller one between the instrument panel. A performance program shows how much horsepower and torque the engine is cranking at the moment. Overall, there is always something to play with, so driving is entertaining.

Under the hood is a healthy 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder turbocharged engine, cranking 362 horsepower. It’s hooked to a nine-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive.

Fuel economy is listed at 19/24 mpg. With

80% freeway trips, and 20% city commuting, we observed 22.4 mpg using premium fuel.

We racked up 600 miles on this SUV before turning it in. It is certainly a pleasant driving experience, with a powerful engine, strong brakes, great handling, smooth ride, comfortable seats and the ability to be taken off pavement. The only gripe revolved around ergonomics, as most of the controls, buttons and switches are complicated and require a long learning curve. But be assured, this Mercedes is never boring.

Kuma’s Great Adventures Mountain Lion attacks in Tramonto Told by Kuma & Written by Lorraine Bossé-Smith Being on the north end of Phoenix certainly has its advantages. We tend to be a little cooler than downtown, and we don’t usually get the haboobs or dust storms. We have lots of wonderful open space—although mom says that will be changing as the state is selling off massive amounts to pay teachers—and I love our starry nights. All of this led my parents to purchase our home here in Tramonto, and we are enjoying our fifth summer here.

Because we aren’t overbuilt yet, we have a lot of wildlife. Mom just loves all the roadrunners, and we have quail everywhere. I personally like the bunnies. I sniff them out and then notify my mom of their presence. I leave them alone because life outside in the desert is difficult enough without some dog chasing them. Recently, we stumbled upon two Javalinas. They are ugly beasts—and mean, too. We turned to go the other way, and they left us alone. We were grateful.

Mom and I have been followed by coyote packs. That always makes us nervous. I can see in their eyes that I look like a snack to them! I know animals are just trying to survive, but when a bobcat tried to come into

my yard once, I wouldn’t have it. I let it know under no circumstances was it welcome here.

Woof!

Let me warn you now: what I’m about to share is extremely sad. Unfortunately, it is a true story. Recently, our neighbor behind us saw a mountain lion in his backyard. Their cat was in the swimming pool trying to evade it.

No such luck. Both mountain lion and cat ended up on our shared brick wall. When the cat jumped into our yard, it ran to our boat for safety. The mountain lion followed, and I won’t share the graphic details of what took place next. Suffice it to say our boat cover was completely shredded and destroyed, and when me and my mom went outside, we found Manilow dead.

Mom had just babysat for MaManilow recently lost her life at the paws of a mountain lion.

nilow when her humans were out of town for Memorial Day. Manilow looked a lot like my brother, Edmond, so seeing her dead was alarming. Her scent was different, so I wasn’t confused, but it was still unsettling. She was a beautiful black cat with awesome eyes. She was also a mamma, and we don’t know the fate of her kittens. I had to sniff out the entire crime scene, and it is exactly as told. Thankfully, the mountain lion killed Manilow in one bite, so she didn’t suffer. What I don’t understand is why Manilow was left and not eaten? If you can explain that to me, I’d appreciate it. Death to live is life in the wild, but killing to kill doesn’t sit right with me.

Anyway, we wrapped her up for our neighbors so they could bury her properly. We paid our respects and said a little prayer.

Please humans: Remember, we live in wild area. All these creatures were here first and are just trying to live. If you have small to mid-size animals, be sure to scope your backyard out before they are let out. Right before sunrise and after sunset are the most dangerous times, but you never know when you will encounter a wild animal. Be diligent and alert. Should you encounter a mountain lion, yell and scream. Be fierce and scare it away.

Your dog or cat’s life could depend upon it.

Rest in peace sweet Manilow.

Attorney Sam Crump fills the froyo void

By Octavio Serrano Sam Crump has led a long and successful career as a military and civil attorney. When he was looking to open a new business, a frozen yogurt shop was the obvious choice.

“I was just drawn to having a retail store and was thinking about different things I would enjoy doing and that I didn’t already see being fulfilled in the community,” Crump says.

Sam’s Frozen Yogurt has been part of Anthem for more than a year, and it is proud to say it puts quality before quantity.

“I’ve always liked frozen yogurt, so I knew immediately I wanted to carry a particular product called Honey Hill Farms out of Arkansas,” Crump says.

In an attempt to be different, Crump steered away from a colorful motif. Instead, he went darker.

“I wanted my décor to be unique compared to most of these franchises you see out there,” Crump says.

“I went with a more of an industrial farm look with concrete floors.”

Sam’s Frozen Yogurt added a bit of diversity to Crump’s entrepreneurial portfolio. It also serves as a reminder that opening a business can be fun.

Crump wants to deliver that experience to his customers.

“It’s a great place to come and have fun.

It’s an affordable treat to our people,” Crump says.

Just Roll With It! Echo Sushi is a prize to North Phoenix/Anthem

By Shelley Sakala Some communities wait years to get an authentic, locally owned sushi restaurant. North Phoenix/Anthem has one right now—and it’s fantastic! Say hello to Echo Sushi.

Don’t let the strip mall location fool you. The food here is legit, and the sushi is just the beginning. Echo serves up top-rate poke bowls, hearty ramen dishes, noodle and fried rice entrees, and biggerthan-expected bento boxes. While it’s not the largest or trendiest sushi restaurant in town, it holds its own with food quality, service, and friendly staff.

The menu features more than 40 kinds of sushi and sashimi, and 30 varieties of sushi rolls, ranging from fresh salmon to baked scallops to the fantastic lobster volcano roll (baked langostino, masago, green onion, eel sauce and spicy mayo on a California roll).

For the carb-conscious, they offer two types of no-rice protein rolls wrapped in either cucumber or soy paper. A signature offering with their entrees is black rice. In addition to being higher in protein and lower in carbs than white or brown rice, it’s considered to be a high-fiber superfood, packed with antioxidants. It’s got a subtle but unique flavor as well as a more chewy and substantial mouth feel than regular white rice.

The interior décor is minimalist and cozy, with plenty of wood and stone surfaces that create an ambience of chic yet casual comfort.

Beautiful pendant lighting and soft, darker paint colors make it a good spot for date night.

Shorts and a T-shirt are just fine, but you wouldn’t feel out of place if you dressed up a tad. This fullservice restaurant has seating at tables and its wraparound sushi bar. It’s about

the size of a small café One of the quirks of Echo Sushi is its lack of a website (which makes it challenging to order takeout). Thankfully, their loyal customers have posted pics of their menu on Yelp! That being said, I prefer to enjoy my sushi in the restaurant, especially during the summer.

Apple Biscuit Dumplings Who knew crispy apples, store bought biscuit dough, a few spices and a can of 7-Up could make the most amazing Apple Biscuit Dumplings? It’s absolutely true and might just be the perfect finish for your Sunday Supper! This easy-as-ever recipe has become my new favorite dessert! It all starts with apple wedges tucked inside biscuit dough.

A beautiful caramel liquid comes together on the cooktop and then poured over the pockets of goodness. Into the oven it goes, and about 30 minutes later, you will have a mouthwatering treat. Spoon a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top and you, your family or your guests will never be the same!

The key to the success of these dumplings is to baste them with the caramel liquid several times during the cooking process. That’s what will give them the deep, rich and unforgettable glaze. Um, by the way, what time is dinner?

Apple Biscuit Dumplings Ingredients: - 4 large apples (makes 24 wedges) - 1 can Pillsbury Grand Biscuits (8 biscuits, divided in half) - 1 cube (8 tablespoons) butter - 1 cup white or brown sugar - 1 cup water - 1 can 7-Up (7.5 or 12-ounce can) - 1 tablespoon vanilla - 1 teaspoon cinnamon - 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg - Pinch of salt Directions: Peel, core and slice apples into wedges, slicing each half into thirds to make approximately 24 wedges. Soak apple sliced in 7-Up. Meanwhile, make caramel syrup.

In a medium pan, melt butter, brown sugar, water, 7-Up from apples, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg and a pinch of salt.

Bring to a boil and cook for about 5

minutes. (Syrup will be runny.) Set aside to cool. Make dumplings. Pull apart each biscuit to make two discs.

Stretch the dough out enough to cover one apple wedge. With tongs or a fork, dunk apple wedge into caramel syrup and place on biscuit disc. Pinch seems around apple wedge (pot sticker or half-moon style) to completely seal.

Place dumpling in an 11- x 17-inch baking pan. Repeat until all apples and dough make dumplings. (You will have leftover apples.) Pour syrup over and around dumplings reserving 1/2 cup of liquid.

Bake at 350 degrees for about 25-30 minutes.

IMPORTANT! To get the glaze over the dumplings, brush reserved 1/2 cup syrup over dumplings several times during cooking process. When dumplings are done, serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

The Frustration of Stretch Marks Help is available for the difficult skin condition

Stretch marks often appear during pregnancy, but can also appear during puberty, weight gain or loss or can even be triggered by hormonal fluctuations.

Although stretch marks can fade over time, they may never go away completely.

The severity and duration of stretch marks are determined by a person’s heredity, hormone levels, number of pregnancies and amount of weight gain or loss.

There are no surefast solutions to prevent stretch marks from forming, but preventative measures such as using a good moisturizer everyday, increasing your vitamin C intake and using sunscreen can help minimize their impact.

If you suffer from stretch marks, there are now great new treatment options to help minimize the effect. Advances in laser technology have made treating stretch marks a simple process.

Laser stretch mark reduction consists of treating stretch marks (striae) by resurfacing and restructuring the skin with a laser.

Laser resurfacing works by restructuring and removing the outer layer of skin to encourage healing and growth of new, soft and stretch mark-free skin.

During the procedure, beams of light and intense energy are used in concentrated amounts to encourage new cellular growth. While treatment cannot get rid of stretch marks completely, laser treatments can greatly improve the appearance, texture and color thereby reducing their appearance.

Two types of lasers are typically used for stretch mark treatments: ablative and nonablative. Ablative lasers (Erbium and CO2) treat stretch marks by destroying and removing the upper layer of skin. The newly generated skin tissue will grow back smoother and softer.

Nonablative lasers (Q-Switch, Fraxel and ClearLift) are less invasive and don’t destroy the outer layer of skin. Instead they

target the underlying tissue to promote collagen growth from the inside out.

The good news is each procedure is quick, relatively painless and has minimal to no downtime associated with treatment.

Depending on the treatment the total procedure typically takes between 30 and 90 minutes to perform. After the treatment, the skin will be slightly pink to red. Depending on the treatment performed, the patient can expect healing to occur over a few days up to a few weeks time.

Laser stretch mark reduction typically requires several treatments (one to six spaced out every four to six weeks). Visual improvement takes place as collagen is formed and skin cells regenerate. Because of this a person can expect treatment results to improve over time. It typically takes four to six weeks for the formation of new collagen.

Once the series of treatments is completed and you are all done with your sessions, with proper care and maintenance, results can last for years.

Workout and Wine The noncompetitive Fitness with Benefits runs the trails

North Phoenix residents Larry Padgett, Lewis Young and Lisa Evans were at a nearby Fry’s Wine Bar, hanging out and sharing stories of their exercise regiments and fitness goals when they had an epiphany.

Why not start a small club to merge their interests.

“We kind of figured, why not do it together? And it started from there,” says Padgett, a sales consultant for a large textile company.

Fitness with Benefits, or FWB, provides a supportive outlet for fitness enthusiasts of all levels of exercise on a variety of local trails.

The area is fortunate to have many mountains and trailheads nearby.

Participants can go as fast or slow as they want, with near certainty they’ll be joined by someone else.

The group meets at 6:30 p.m. on Thursdays.

“We want to stress how noncompetitive it is. It’s just for fun and for us to enjoy getting out of the house to do something healthy,” Padgett says.

Padgett and Evans only recently took up trail running, and they share the same passion for mountain biking. A longtime track and field athlete, Lewis was a standout runner at Long Beach State University.

He is considered the group’s mentor.

The camaraderie of FWB allows the exercisers to push themselves.

While the person nearby is struggling or racing past their perceived physical limits, it provides others a chance to clear the same challenge.

“It kind of makes you realize you can push yourself a little more. You see someone and they want to keep up with you or you want to keep up with them. It’s a pretty cool thing,” says Evans, a dental hygienist.

The club isn’t just about exercising. The trio met at a wine bar and will continue to frequent local haunts like Limon Tacos and Tequila for refreshments after their workouts.

Young, whose kids joined him on a July 11 run at the Desert Hills Trailhead, says FWB’s social aspects are one of its best traits.

“We’re kind of regulars there anyway, and it’s just a good time to go after a workout. You feel kind of accomplished,” says Young, a senior loan specialist.

The group is small for now, with the three founders as regulars. June wasn’t the best month to start, considering the heat. However, once the weather cools off a bit, and the group is more established, FWB hopes to increase its numbers.

Plans include visits to new trails and activities, and possibly even day or weekend exercise or hiking trips. FWB’s founders say the group has the makings of a staple for local fitness enthusiasts for years to come.

“It’s fun. We’re a tight-knit community, and I wanted to see what kind of group we could put together of the people we know around here,” Padgett says. “And I’m excited to see how we can grow it.”
